Integrity - The Blackest Curse

Integrity (or for a little while Integ2000) was born the same year I was, but unlike so many hardcore bands from the 80's and 90's that for some reason continue to headline their yearly festival appearance, this band has not lost any of it's relevance, power or capacity to write interesting music. This latest album, which was just released on deathwish, was written and recorded almost entirely by Dwid Hellion and long time Integ member Rober Orr. This is the more raw and aggressive Integrity that we have not seen for some time. Alot more metal then breakdown, this album highlights the best parts of Integrity's sound and aesthetic, which is creepy fucking hardcore. Only complaint is that there is no vocal test!

Young Governor

Young Governor is this dude Ben who plays guitar in Fucked Up. And as is with all other projects from members of that band, it is way better then Fucked Up! This stuff is hard to describe, distorted unique singing with lots of catchy power pop guitar. There really isn't much I can say about this besides that it's catchy as fuck and Ben should quit Fucked Up and do this full time. He has released a bunch of 7"s , usually with just 2 songs on each so it can be a little annoying to track it all down. This link is a to a folder with the following releases:

Burning Love - Songs for Burning Lovers

Burning Love's demo was one of my favorite releases of last year. Chris Colohan has fronted some incredible bands in the past (Cursed and Left for Dead) and so my hopes were high for this release. Although not as much of a blockbust hit as I was expecting this album is pretty great. The songs are very similar to what was found on last years demo, in fact many of them are the same songs, just re recorded. Way more rocky and metal then any of Chris's other projects this album dose have some real ragers. However I think these songs could have done better with a more raw and less produced sound. Also, while they tie in the old songs well, I think it should have been all new stuff.

Walls - Tour EP

Walls is made up of members of the mighty Iron Lung and Cold Sweat. There was a lot of hype about these guys a year or two ago and this is their first release since. Noisy angery feedback laiden hardcore plain and simple. This EP features two new songs that are a little slower then their previous stuff and a cover of Live Wire by Die Kreuzen.

Ceremony - Sick EP

This 2 song EP has one new song 'sick' (duh) off the upcoming LP 'Rohnert Park' on B9 (lol). This song has received a lot of love and a lot of hate all across the internet since it was posted on the B9 myspace. B9 and all those kids suck, I feel this song is pretty cool. It is basically a laundry list of shit the singer is pissed off about, which I can get behind. The second song 'life as a war' is a new recording of the song 'this is my war' off of 'violence violence'. This new version is noisier and probably angrier then the original. these songs give us a good idea of what Ceremony will be doing on the new LP, which is angrier noisier shit that will probably be awesome.

DRUNKDRIVER - LP

Drunkdriver never really did much for me, their previous recordings sounded like noisier pissed jeans rip offs through blown out speakers recorded in macbook internal mics. I always felt they were trying to find themselves, and seemed like they could not decide between being a Jesus Lizard worship band or a mysterious guy hardcore band. Well this last LP released this month after their sudden break earlier this year has definitely changed my mind! Noisy, fucked up, and totally original, this LP is explosive and brooding all at the same time. I think a lot of this LP's success has to do with the better recording quality it has to all over Drunkdriver releases, this is still low-fi and full of noise and feed back, this record has just the right amount of production to highlight the manic energy of this band. To bad that whole rape thing had to surface earlier this year and end this band before they were ever able to perform their best work.

RVIVR - LP

This is the most successful full length released by any ex Latterman band to date. The Shorebirds EP was great but the LP lacked the same energy and the songs just seemed seemed less interesting. the RVIVR EP was also great and this greatness has continued and has been surpassed with this new LP. I feel like this is the first time one of these bands is not trying to live up to what Latterman was and trying to create something new. This is poppier and catchier then either Shorebirds or the first RVIVR EP and utilizes more female vocals which sounds great.

so theres like a million things on ifyoumakeit now and they are all kinda similar so its hard to sort through them. luckily i downloaded many of them and as i listened to latterman cover band after latterman cover band (many containing members of latterman) i found this one which is actually fucking awesome. way catchy, sounds exactly like yo man go, and is also from philly. maybe it's members of yo man go, who knows? but wow seriously this is great, one of the best bands in this style, download it immediately!

Nomos/The Men split CS

I've been waiting months for this! Since it's release about a week ago I have been tirelessly venturing to the most down trodden parts of the internet for some hint of the mp3's, but was afraid I was going to have to wait till saturday to get my grubby little hands on it (as long as academy records hasn't sold out yet). Well thanks the awesome people at icoulddietomarrow I have to wait no longer and have posted a great tape rip they made. Nomos are one of my favorite bands creating sound right now, and with out a doubt the best thing coming out of brooklyn. And guess what?! The Men are the second best thing. So basically this tape is amazing like I had expected. The Nomos songs are incredible, Garret sounds even more angry at life then ever, which is pretty damn hard to do. The songs are noisier and a bit slower then the stuff from the demo, but just as great. Each band has two original and one cover song. The Nomos cover is a song called Dale Nixon which is cover of Nothing Left Inside by Black Flag, which came in either came in 6 or 11 minute versions. This Nomos one is 5:45 minuetes and sounds pretty similar to the originals if a little bit noisier. The Men side is with out a doubt their best material yet. Supper noisy and fuzzed out garage rocky shit but is angrier and more to the point then the more jammy then We are The Men

Black Breath - Heavy Breathing

Black Breath totally blew me away when I saw them last summer with Victims in new brunswick. They created some of the fullest and heaviest sounds I had ever herd live and still might be the best sounding thing I ever herd in a basement. At that point they just had one one sided 12" out with just a few songs on it that are really good but I feel the recordings failed to capture the incredible full heavy sound that they produce live. This new record is superior in every way. Heavy Breathing is more hardcore then the previous release with some awesome unrelenting d-beats and general awesome drumming from their drummer who looks a great deal like a human pear. This record is also way more metal with some killer metal riffs and solos. I give a decent amount of credit to the greatness of this record to the beautiful recording work of the mighty Kurt Ballou of God City Studios and his ability to capture the incredible heaviness, power and energy of Black Breath.

Slices - Cruising

I really liked the first two 7"s by this band and Cruising is just as good if not better. Maybe not as fast as the 7"s, This album rocks really hard and then slows it down with some cool weirdo shit that is all the rave these days. Also this was released by iron lung so you know its awesome and the cover is fucking GREAT.

Rational Animals - Distorted Temptation

I saw this band a couple weeks ago at the Asbury Lanes Pissed Jeans show. After driving for many hours they showed up late due to van troubles, hit the stage as soon as they arrived and played so hard they had broken the PA after about 10 minuets. If that didn't already make them awesome this 7'' sure dose. the singer sounds like an incredibly tortured version of danzing. My friend Dave from bombs away! knows these guys pretty well and says they are some of the strangest people he has ever met. They also have a song on that 'the world itself is a bad dream' comp with nazi dust+ others and a new 7" that I should probably also find.

The Raincoats - S/T

This was the first release from this supper influential sexy girl trio back in 1979. Amazing post punk/indie/new wave whatever with screechy violins and lots of songs about angst and sexuality. Listening to this I can't believe that it was released so long ago, it sounds completely contemporary. I guess that just illustrates how important they were. The Vivian Girls wish they had 1/4 the awesomeness of this band. They reformed in 93 and are still playing shows, mostly with pavement lol.

Weed Hounds - Demo

This is another female fronted band but is fairly new and from Long Island. I didn't think bands from Long Island Existed that didn't sound like either Latterman or Kill Your Idols but I guess I am proven wrong! This band is totally delightful and mixes dreamy shoegazy vocals with garage/pop punk and is just plane great.

Low Threat Profile - S/T 7"

This was a super group with members of infest, no comment and lack of interest. I'm not sure if they ever played shows, but they did record this in 1996 and was only just released a couple months ago on deepsix and HOLY FUCK is it good. This is powerviolence played at it's most powerful by the people who started powerviolence.

Cursed - The Last Session

This was one of my favorite hardcore bands of recent times but wasn't able to get my act together and see them before their ill fated euro tour in 08 that broke them up. While it was that tour that ended their career prematurely it did leave behind these awesome recordings of 5 of their songs. Faster and rawer than their initial recordings, this 7" that just came out through No Idea and High Anxiety is a great parting gift for Cursed. If you were a fan of this band you have to check out Burning Love, Chris's new band.

Black Wine - S/T

This new band had their record release show at my soon to be house a couple weeks ago and I was lucky enough to catch them the next day as well at the Bowery Ballroom with The Screaming Females, Forgetters and Shellshag. They were great both times and I really liked what I herd. This band has members of Hunchback and The Ergs! but this is way more melodic than either. I REALLY like this LP and can't wait to see what else comes of this band and am very happy to have seen their beginning.

I saw this band with Brainkiller, Scapegoat and Nomos a couple months ago and was quite impressed. The singer was wearing booty shorts, a bathrobe and slippers and flipping the fuck out. They are from Montreal and have a bit of that whole Canadian 80's HC Career Suicide/old Fucked Up thing going on but played it way faster than Fucked Up and are WAY better. This is their demo, they just came out with a new 7" but I can't find it anywhere and they didn't have it available when I saw them. Anyone have a link to this?

The new tour cassette from scapegoat. This band is fast and dangerous. Some obvious crossed out love here, one of the best bands playing powerviolence right now. This band likes to set off fireworks during their sets. I broke my nose when I saw them.

The first is Black SS. This band is from Syracus and is straight edge but they are no facecast! They sound a lot like poison idea to me but with more gruff vocals. And probably less morbidly obese people. This LP rules!

I've had the opportunity to see this band a few times and I can (fairly) safely say that they are one of the most hard hitting and super angriest bands out there today. Here's the latest album from New York's hipster blip-punk gods Anamanaguchi. In case you haven't heard their first album Power Supply, they play a mix of wonderfully catchy Bitshifter/Saskrotch type gameboy bliss with some nicely textured and fuzzy guitars and such to give it that extra punch; all instrumental of course. Also, this album has real drums and it's quite as upbeat sometimes! This shit is soooooooooooooo good. For fans of Fang Island, Adventure, and obviously fans of 8bitpeoples (though if you like them you probably already have this album).

crusty skrams! skramzy crust! either way, this ekkaia's first release back when they didn't sound like His Hero is Gone. it's a really cool combination of european screamo with more thrashy parts. for fans of aus-rotten, nausea, orchid, shikari, caustic christ and might i say rites of spring? good good band from spain. and their name comes from lord of the rings shiat.
